Sonar for Search and Rescue
Search and rescue personnel regularly conduct difficult underwater searches for submerged vehicles, drowning victims, and other objects of interest. With current advances in technology, the cost of sonar systems has become more affordable and an invaluable piece of equipment in aiding search operations. Accurately detecting a target can be an arguous task, requiring advanced sonar analysis knowledge, skills, and patience. Knowing how to reduce factors that can lead to false targets such as frequency adjustment, range, and proper boat handling can drastically decrease search times. Long duration operations can be reduced to hours with proper sonar data collection and interpretation. This 2-day course is led by a highly experienced USCG Veteran and 200-ton boat captain with a broad range of experience in oceanographic services in support of observation, survey and investigation. Students will receive certifications in the following: WTR Sonar for Search and Rescue Operator (Water Training Resources), Introduction to Power-boating (National Safe Boating Council), and Precision Docking and Boat Handling (National Safe Boating Council).
